When it comes to the fabric of a bench seat, many people focus solely on the color and feel. In fact, the seat is the place where the force is most concentrated in the entire piece of furniture. People sit down, stand up, move, and the repeated pressure and friction fall on this layer of cloth, and the seams also have to withstand horizontal pulling. Therefore, the materials used for the seat, backrest, and sides actually bear different responsibilities.
Whether a piece of fabric is good or not depends on at least five aspects: fiber composition, yarn shape, fabric structure, surface effect, and finishing. It is also polyester and can be made into plain weave, jacquard, suede, imitation linen or bouclé surface with grain rings. The feel, wear resistance and cleaning performance will be much worse. Therefore, it is far from enough to just look at what the fiber is, and to ask clearly what structure it is woven into and what treatment it has undergone.
First define the purpose of this bench
The first step in material selection is to explain the usage scenarios clearly. The frequency of use and the risk of stains are completely different for shoe-changing stools in the entrance, benches in the dining room, bay window seats, and piano stools. The requirements for wear resistance, strong fracture resistance, seam slip, and color fastness in low-frequency private spaces and high-frequency public spaces are not on the same order of magnitude. If you have children or pets at home, snagging, pilling, and cleanability should be ranked first.
For chair furniture, it is also necessary to specifically look at the size of the seat and backrest, the location of edge wear, how the curved surface is wrapped, and where the seams fall. The small seat surface of a dining chair is not very large. The shape of the base plate, the thickness of the edges, and the position of the fixing screws must all be measured clearly. The construction requirements are no lower than those of a sofa.
Several common choices for seat fabric
Polyester is a common choice for seat surfaces. The fiber layer is low in moisture absorption, quick-drying, wrinkle-resistant, and not easy to stretch or shrink. However, it can produce a lot of surface effects. 100% polyester only indicates the fiber content, which does not mean that it will pass the test just because it is wear-resistant, pilling-resistant or color fast. The specific results still depend on the test results.
Acrylic has good springback. The fiber layer is resistant to sunlight, oil and some chemicals. You can pay more attention to the direct sunlight in your home, but the lightfastness and color fastness of the finished product still depend on dyeing and testing. Linen absorbs moisture quickly, has a natural luster and a crisp feel, making it suitable for scenes that like a natural texture. However, its rebound and wrinkle resistance are relatively limited, and shrinkage and mildew should also be considered in advance.
Cotton absorbs moisture and stains well, but has limited springback and wrinkles easily, making cotton-polyester blends a common compromise. The bunclé’s grains and ring surface are easily recognizable, but this exposed ring requires careful verification of pilling, hooking, and cleaning on surfaces that are frequently rubbed. canvas has a thick plain weave and a clear weave. When wrapping curved surfaces and soft edges, the softness and sewing performance must be verified.
How to view wear-resistant numbers
When it comes to durability, wear resistance testing is an essential tool. Wyzenbeek and Martindale are two different testing systems with different motion patterns, abrasives, and result expressions. The numbers on both sides cannot be directly converted or used for aspect ratios. The ACT guidelines, which are often cited in the industry, set a reference line for low-frequency private spaces and a higher reference line for high-frequency public spaces. However, reaching the reference value does not mean that the service life is long. In fact, it also depends on the structure, maintenance and usage.
In addition to wear resistance, pilling, snagging, strong breaking, and seam slippage are all independent items, and no matter how high the wear resistance number is, it cannot replace them. Dark, highly saturated fabrics also require attention to color fastness to rubbing, meaning that the color will transfer to the garment during dry or wet wiping.
How to maintain it in daily life
For maintenance, first check the cleaning code on the care label. W indicates that water-based cleaners can be used as described, S is solvent-based, WS is one of two options, and X is usually only vacuumed or brushed, and professional treatment is required if necessary. The code only indicates which type of cleaning medium is allowed, which does not mean that the stain can be removed, nor does it mean that the mask can be removed and washed.
Regular vacuuming and removing loose particles can reduce the amount of dirt that gets pressed into the fabric during repeated sitting. After splashing, absorb the liquid as directed and do not allow it to seep into the filling and backing. Do not oversaturate the fabric and foam when cleaning, otherwise it may easily leave watermarks, dry slowly, or even cause color migration.
Don’t ignore construction details when changing cloth
If you want to re-wrap an old bench, the fixing points are mostly concentrated on the edge and corner of the seat plate. When selecting materials, you must take into account the thickness of the corner, the strength of the nail or sewing, and how to close the bottom. Before officially unloading, it is best to record the shape of the base plate, edge thickness and screw avoidance position, and then discharge the material according to the actual width, pile direction and flower shape.
The same material, used on the seat surface of a bench and on an armchair, has different stress points. When choosing an armchair fabric, you should also return to the specific conditions of the armchair’s seat and backrest dimensions, wear and tear on the armrest edges, and the curved cover. The choice of armchair fabric material is consistent with the seat surface, and the fiber, structure and finishing should be viewed separately; the scope of armchair upholstery material actually also includes lining and filling these layers, don’t just focus on the outermost layer of fabric. The armchair cloth that is often spoken of refers to the surface cloth used for covering, and its performance is determined by actual sitting pressure and friction.
For companies that make sand distribution, curtain fabrics and home textiles all year round, the problem of selecting materials for such seats occurs almost every day. The truly safe approach is to first clarify the purpose, structure, and testing, and then look at the color and feel.
