The leather is already cracked or the color no longer suits the space, but if the sofa still feels comfortable to sit on, many people consider reupholstering it with fabric. The real difficulty is not to put a new piece of cloth on, but to confirm that the old surface, filling, fixed edge and furniture structure can together support another 1 of coating methods.
Many people will directly ask, “Can a leather sofa be reupholstered in fabric?” It can be considered, but it cannot be concluded only on the basis of the appearance of the leather surface. First, determine how the original covering was installed; then, inspect the internal condition after it has been removed; only after that should you proceed to selecting and cutting the fabric.

First distinguish whether it is a removable cover, stitched or stapled fixed skin, or a skin that is bonded with foam, molded, or even integrated with structural parts. The disassembly and assembly paths of these structures are very different.
The traditional fixed cover can usually be gradually disassembled along the original assembly relationship, but the cushion, piping, seams, fasteners, wood trim and fixing sequence should be recorded before disassembly. Bonded or molded skins are not necessarily suitable for peeling, cutting and re-stapling in the usual way, and rash handling may damage the foam contour or leave unusable edges.
Sofas with recliner mechanism, folding bed, adjustable headrest, electric device or connecting module need to look one more step: new fabrics, seams and fixing points must not hinder movement, heat dissipation, wiring harness, switch, locking and maintenance positions.
Replacing the fabric only involves changing the surface covering material and related components; it does not automatically repair the frame, springs, suspension, or foam. If the furniture has loose frame, suspension failure, filling powder, mildew, insect pests or persistent odor, these problems should be dealt with first, and then whether the renovation is still valuable.
After the leather surface is removed, it is also necessary to see if the lower foam and contour fit the fabric. If the original hole position, hard edge, concave point or uneven transition is not handled, the contour may still appear after the new cloth is wrapped, and local stress is easy to form at the long-term friction.
Directly adding a layer of cloth to the unevaluated leather surface seems to save the removal step, but it will change the overall thickness, corner volume, stapling depth and air permeability, and may also seal pollution or internal defects inside. Whether the existing layer should be retained should be determined by the actual structural conditions, rather than treating “covering it up” as a fixed solution.
If the original leather surface can be safely removed, the construction party should also confirm which edges, strips or fixed areas can continue to be used and which positions need to be rebuilt. Leather and fabric differ in thickness, stretch, back‑side friction, and corner‑fold performance; therefore, a sample piece should be produced before adopting the original fixing method.
Fabrics suitable for covering sofas are subject to sitting pressure, friction, seams and cleaning loads. When purchasing, don’t just look at the color or hand feeling, but also hand over the actual width, thickness, stretching and recovery, loose edge, backing, directionality, pattern circulation, nursing method and the requirements of high-load parts to the construction party for verification.
Curved surfaces, deep buckles, rolling edges and small radius corners are especially pick materials. Thick cloths may form oversized laminations at corners, while soft, thin cloths may penetrate the underlying contours or slip in use. Larger samples should be bent, sewn or wrapped on similar curved surfaces. A good-looking flat sample does not prove that the finished product will be suitable.
Two or three seats only indicate the seat category. Armrest width, backrest height, number of cushions, skirt edges, deep buttons and furniture structure will change the panels. The formal dosage shall be rearranged according to each piece, net width, laying direction, seam and fold back allowance, flower back, floral, velvet direction and defect avoidance.
The old skin removed can help identify the position and assembly relationship of the cut pieces, but it cannot be used as a new cloth template without correction. Old pieces may have been stretched, shrunk, torn, or modified, and the direction of the fabric and seam requirements may be different. Before cutting, the reviewable discharge diagram and incoming batch information shall be retained.
Before commencing formal installation, perform a dry-run fitting to verify the centerline, seams, nap or pattern alignment, curvature adherence, secure edging, and the full operational range of any moving mechanisms. After final fixation, inspect the creases, localized stresses, edge finishing, seat cushion repositioning, bottom seam closure, and whether the original labels have been properly retained.
Complex mechanisms, bonded skins or molded structures are not suitable for dismantling and testing. First, let the refurbishment personnel confirm whether the original surface layer can be safely removed, whether the foam contour can be used, and whether the fixed edge can be rebuilt. If these three items are not clearly seen, do not buy cloth first.
