When a leather sofa starts to peel, crack, or no longer fit the style of the home, it seems easy to cover it directly with a layer of cloth. What really affects the result is not whether the cloth can cover the leather surface, but how the old covering layer is fixed and what structures can be used after being disassembled. When deciding whether you can reupholster a leather sofa with fabric, you should start by assessing the sofa itself, rather than choosing the fabric color first.
First observe whether the old surface is a removable cover, stitched, stapled, or bonded or molded with foam. The first few structures may have a clear disassembly path; the outer skin that is bonded, molded or integrated with the structural part may not be suitable for traditional peeling, plate making and re-stapling.

Do not layer new fabric directly onto the old leather without first understanding the structure. The seams, holes, warped edges and thickness changes of the original surface layer may penetrate into the surface of the new cloth, forming pits or hard edges; slippage between the two layers of material will also make it difficult to maintain the contour. It is safer for the construction personnel to confirm whether the old layer can be safely removed and which edges, linings and fixed positions need to be rebuilt.
The cloth change only handles the surface covering and its assembly, and does not automatically repair the frame, spring, suspension or foam. Before disassembling, check whether the frame is loose, whether the support is invalid, and whether the foam is pulverized, collapsed or obviously deformed. If the interior has lost the value of continued use, only changing the table cloth may make the appearance look newer, but retain the root causes that affect the feeling of sitting and life.
Local fading and material embrittlement should also be seen separately. A color change does not necessarily mean that strength has been lost; conversely, recoloring does not restore a material that has worn thin, cracked, or lost support. Record the location, scope and depth of the damage and whether it enters the seam and filling layer, so as to judge whether it is local repair, whole surface replacement or complete cloth replacement.
“Decorative fabric” is not a fixed material. Fiber composition, fabric structure, surface appearance, backing, and finishing treatments all collectively influence its appearance and processing performance. When used for fixed coating, the fabric needs to adapt to cutting, sewing, corner folding, nailing, curved surface fitting and seam stress. The tile sample feels comfortable and cannot prove that it can smoothly wrap through handrails or small radius corners.
Thick cloth may be too thick at the corners, hindering stapling, clamping or wood trim reset; Too thin cloth may show underlying color difference, old holes and foam contours. Fabrics with velvet, striped, checked or obvious patterns should also be oriented and floral. Before selecting the material, it is best to use a large enough sample on a similar surface to try to bend, try to sew or try to wrap, and at the same time confirm the front and back, stretch, loose edge, thickness, backing and nursing requirements.
The recliner mechanism, folding bed, adjustable headrest, power module and connectors will change the cloth exchange path. The added fabric thickness, seams or fixing points cannot enter the movement area, nor can they block the wiring harness, switch, lock and maintenance position. Even if the sofa shape is ordinary, as long as it has a movable structure, it should also record the original seams, fixing methods and the direction of movement of each component before dismantling.
Old leather panels and disassembled photos can help identify the original outline, but old materials are not suitable as 33.33cm-inch templates after they have undergone elongation or deformation. Re-plate still to the actual furniture and new fabric specifications prevail.
“A few-seater sofa” is not sufficient to provide a reliable usage estimate. Armrest width, backrest height, number of cushions, piping, skirts, deep buckles and visible seams all change the panel. Formal procurement should be based on the size of each piece, the available width, the direction of laying, the fold and seam allowance, the pattern cycle, the position of the flower and the pile direction.
If the largest visible pattern piece exceeds the fabric’s net width, you must also determine in advance where seams are permitted. Plain non-directional fabrics cannot be measured in the same way as one-way suede or large flower fabrics. The final dosage should be reviewed by the person responsible for plate making or construction to avoid buying cloth first and then finding that the direction, width or fixing method cannot match.
Projects suitable for further advancement can usually answer several things: the original cortex can be removed according to a clear path, the frame and internal support are worth retaining, the foam contour can match the fabric, the new fixed edge can be reliably established, and the candidate fabric has also passed the corresponding test package and care check. If any of these key conditions are still unclear, it is more appropriate to suspend blanking first than to use the finished cloth for trial and error.
Changing the leather sofa to a fabric surface is a re-cladding and assembly, not a simple cover. First, let the construction party confirm the structure, disassembly and assembly path and fabric processing restrictions, and then decide whether to use fixed cloth change, customized movable cover, or keep the current situation for local treatment.
